Our Story

The McPhail's Furniture Story

The McPhails journey began in 1969 when Keith McPhail married Bev Kensington. Keith’s roots were in Yarrawonga, and Bev’s were in Wangaratta. They settled in Wangaratta and bought a carrying and furniture removal business based beside the Wangaratta Railway Station and opposite the North Eastern Hotel.

Through the furniture removals, Keith was often left with surplus furniture. Drawing on his auctioneering background from his time as a stock agent, Keith and Bev purchased the old Peters Ice Cream warehouse at the current location of the Wangaratta store.  At this location, they held monthly auctions for used furniture.

What began as a side venture soon outgrew the removal business. In 1975, Keith and Bev sold the removals operation and officially launched McPhail’s Antiques and Used Furniture. The new business grew steadily over the next 20 years with the addition of new furniture.

Son, Casey, joined Keith and Bev in the business in 1995. In a heartbreaking turn, Keith passed away unexpectedly in 1997. At this difficult time, son Jason joined the company to provide support for Bev and Casey and by 2005 he had expanded the business into Wodonga. McPhail's Wodonga originally operated at Watson Street opposite the Wodonga Plaza.

In 2007 Bev handed the reigns over to the two boys who shifted the business to direct purchasing internationally. Casey decided to expand further and opened McPhail's Shepparton in 2009 as the business continued to grow.

In 2014 youngest brother, Taylor joined the family business, bringing a new enthusiasm to rebrand and establish the business online. Taking over from Jason in 2015, Taylor now co-owns and runs the family business alongside Casey.

With strong demand and a growing digital presence, the brothers made a strategic decision to consolidate operations and focus on their online store, supported by a single, flagship showroom in Wangaratta. Casey and Taylor have been continuously renovating and enhancing the space, transforming it from a shed into a beautifully presented showroom. In recent years McPhails Furniture has gained a massive online following and continues to grow with the introduction of the $59 flat-rate delivery fee servicing Victoria, NSW, ACT, South East SA, South East QLD and WA.

As of 2025, we operate from an 18,000 square foot distribution centre, warehousing our full range of furniture to support our two-week delivery commitment. This facility also houses our head office, home to dedicated teams across logistics, accounts, customer care, and quality assurance.

The McPhails Furniture story is one of resilience, growth, and family dedication. From humble beginnings, the business has evolved through challenges and transitions, with each generation bringing fresh ideas and commitment. Today, under the guidance of Taylor and Casey, McPhails Furniture stays true to its roots while it continues to grow, keeping family values and a commitment to quality at its heart.
